
12″ New Snow Possible for Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains by Tuesday
High elevations of Montana's Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains could see a foot or more fresh snow by noon Tuesday. A cold front is moving into the state, and a few mountainous areas could get blanketed in heavy, wet snow.
Two things are very important details about this particular Winter Storm Warning: there will be gusty winds of 30+ MPH, and the current Beartooth Highway snow removal efforts will probably be delayed a bit.
- Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains: A WINTER STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNITL NOON TUESDAY.
- WHAT...Heavy snow expected on northeast aspects.
- Total snow accumulations between 10 and 15 inches above 7000 feet.
- Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
- WHERE...Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains.
- WHEN...Until noon Tuesday.
- IMPACTS...Recreation in the high country will be impacted by heavy accumulating snow.
- The heavy snow will also hamper snow removal operations on the Beartooth Highway.
- ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Much less snow will fall on southwest and west facing slopes, including the mountains around Cooke City.
- PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Be prepared for wintry conditions if you plan to venture into the mountains.
"A Winter Storm Warning indicates that heavy snow of at least 6 inches in 12 hours, or at least 8 inches in 24 hours, is expected. It can also be issued if sleet accumulation will be at least half an inch." (National Weather Service)
The Little Belt and Highwood Mountains (areas north of White Sulphur Springs), may get 3" to 6" of heavy, wet snow by noon Monday. The highest elevations of Highway 89 in that area might be affected.
