Valuable Snow: 6″ More For Montana’s Little Belt Mountains
Central Montana is in great need of more snow, and there's good news: up to 6" of fresh snow is headed for the Little Belt and Highwood Mountains by Saturday morning. Travel on King's Hill Pass and the surrounding area may be affected.
We've written a lot about Montana's lack of snowpack this year. Certain parts of the state are still VERY far behind snowpack average, so this advisory is great news for central Montana.
Portions of Montana have improved greatly, such as the southern portion of southwest Montana. That area near Yellowstone National Park and the Idaho border has received large amounts of snow during recent storms. As of March 28th, 2024 this is the SNOTEL water equivalent map:
- A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 6 AM SATURDAY.
- WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations 2 to 6 inches.
- WHERE...Little Belt and Highwood Mountains.
- The area in this advisory is located north of White Sulphur Springs
- WHEN...From noon Friday to 6 AM Saturday.
- IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions and reduced visibility along highway 89, with the heaviest snow expected near King's Hill Pass Friday afternoon and evening.
- PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Slow down and use caution while traveling.
- The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1

"Approaching the traditional Western peak snowpack date of April 1, snow-water equivalencies were mostly near or above average, except in much of Montana, Washington, northern Idaho, and northeastern Wyoming. Those low snowpack numbers were reflected in ongoing moderate to extreme drought (D1 to D3) in the northern Rockies and environs." (Drought Monitor)
